Fresh Salad Dressing Flavors

Salads are a mealtime staple in my home. Lunch is often a simple garden salad, nothing fancy, nothing extravagant. Crisp greens, a hard boiled egg and a handful of whatever chopped veggies I have on hand.

I enjoy salad dressings and at any given moment you’ll find quite the selection of dressings – store bought & homemade – in my refrigerator. Although a simple balsamic & oil will always be my favorite, I appreciate fresh flavors. It keeps my simple salad habits exciting.

The past few years I’ve been making my best effort to avoid seed oils. Most store bought dressings are loaded in them. If you’re looking for seed oil free salad dressings in the grocery store I suggest starting in the refrigerated area in the produce section. You can also check in the aisles with “specialty, gourmet or organic” items. Also check in the aisle around the other salad dressings – you’ll be looking usually higher shelf and higher price. Read labels – just because it’s organic or a better brand – doesn’t mean there aren’t seed oils in it.

Understanding Raw Honey

What many of you may (or may not) know is that we are a bit of a homesteading family. We hunt, we grow what vegetables we can, we can foods, we preserve and we ferment. We tend to a nice size flock of happy free ranging hens who give us more eggs then we could ever possibly use (we share). And we have honey bees.

Beekeeping has been quite the journey for us. There has been loss and there has been failure. There have been swarms lost and found and many stings (and EpiPens). Sweat, a few tears and many dollars spent.

All that said, we’re still beekeeping. We enjoy & appreciate honey bees – and of course we love their honey.

Side note. If you’re interested in beekeeping you can start by reading George Imirie’s Pink Pages – pretty much the original East Coast beekeepers bible.

It’s important to understand that that big jug of honey you find at your grocery store for ten bucks is not real honey. It’s honey, by definition, but it’s not produced by the bees the way mother nature intended. That value honey (often coming in from overseas) is produced by feeding bees sugar & sugar syrup. Bees will absolutely collect, store and cap it.

You want honey that bees produce by foraging & collecting nectars of their liking in their landscape. We tend to call this raw honey. Finding raw honey is easy – look for your local beekeeper or head to your local farmers market or health food store.

Ingredients & Instructions

Honey Vinaigrette Salad Dressing made with raw honey & apple cider vinegar | www.craftycookingmama.com

This isn’t one of those super thick & sweet dipping type dressings that everyone seems to associate a honey salad dressing with. This is a crisp and tangy light vinaigrette with just the right amount of sweet honey flavor.

Making this Honey Vinaigrette seriously couldn’t get any simpler. Everything goes into a mason jar, gets capped and given a good shaking. Keep refrigerated. Before serving let this dressing sit for about 10 minutes at room temp and shake well. The ingredients do separate & setup – so shake it.

That’s it. An easy summer salad dressing made with local honey. This stuff will keep for quite some time – but I’m sure the honey lovers will get it used up in no time.

Thanks for stopping by!

I love making homemade salad dressings because then I can feel like I actually MADE dinner instead of throwing lettuce and veggies in a bowl 🙂 🙂 🙂 I like the idea of using the paprika with the honey. Sounds yummy!!

Thanks Erin! Homemade salad dressings are awesome! Oh, and I don’t feel guilty about not making dinner EVER! Lol! I wish I didn’t more often – but I’m too picky and too cheap to eat out all the time 🙂

Thanks for the recipe. I reduced the oil and honey, increased the apple cider vinegar (to reduce calories and sugar) It turned out fantastic!!!
I used local wildflower raw honey and Aldi’s Simply Nature apple cider vinegar.

I have made this dressing according to the instructions at least a dozen times – I love it! Bonus is I usually always have the ingredients on hand, so I get the craving to eat a salad and whip up this dressing, easy peasy lemon squeezy. Thank you for putting this recipe out into the world!
